Schwinn A40 Elliptical Review
Schwinn A40 Elliptical
Schwinn A40 Elliptical Review – Highlights:
The Schwinn A40 Elliptical is currently Schwinn’s most affordable elliptical trainer, coming in at a steal of a price for under $500.
It’s a simple, fairly bare-bones machine. You’re not getting a lot of bells and whistles here. Then again, a lot of people want a simple elliptical – and don’t want to pay for extras that they won’t use.

You do get several built-in workouts to add some challenge to your workout. Plus the console (while simple) does come with a media rack to hold your tablet.
So you can watch movies or TV shows through your tablet as you workout – which is a nice option to have, especially if you get bored easily.
Plus you can also charge your tablet as you run – so no worrying about running out of power during your workout.
There’s also an iPod dock with speakers. So you can plug in your phone or other device and play your music through the built in speakers.
Schwinn A40 Elliptical Console
The LCD console shows you a constant readout of your speed, time, RPM, distance, calories, results and heart rate. There’s also a scrolling hills display to show you how hard you’re working at any one time.

You can also keep track of your heart rate with the hand grip sensors in front of the console on the stationary handle bars.
Plus you’ll notice this console is so simple, you can easily figure out how to use it in seconds. It’s intuitive and you don’t need to read an entire manual to figure it out.

Articulating Footpedals
One major benefit to Schwinn ellipticals that not alot of people know about are the articulating footpedals (which are found on the A40 as well as the 430 and 470 models).
These follow and support the motion of your feet and ankles as you go through the elliptical path. It’s a really nice feature to have as it can make for a more comfortable workout overall.

Light and Easy to Move
The Schwinn A40 elliptical comes with wheels on the bottom. Plus it’s also lighter than Schwinn’s other ellipticals.
So it can be easy to move around – which is great if you have a smaller workout area – or a fitness room that doubles as something else like an office or living room.

Schwinn A40 Elliptical Review – Any Downsides?
There are, unfortunately, quite a few downsides to this elliptical trainer:
Non-Backlit Console
The console is not backlit and can be a little challenging to read – especially if lighting is not the best in your workout area.
Media Shelf
While having a media shelf is a great way to add entertainment to your workouts, the way the shelf is positioned on this trainer, your tablet will cover the display window – so you won’t be able to see your stats if you’re looking at your tablet.
Shorter Stride
At 17.5 inches long, the stride is quite short – much shorter than other Schwinn ellipticals like the 430 or 470 which come with longer 20 inch strides. If you’re taller you might find that this feels a bit jerky, especially when you pick up the pace.
Short Warranty
You only get a 6 month warranty on the parts and electrical on this trainer. Not surprising considering the price tag.
However this is something to be aware of – especially because a lot of reviews on this elliptical complain about the plastic parts breaking after 1-2 years.
Plastic parts and a short warranty are not a good combination if you’re looking for a quality elliptical trainer.
