Nordictrack ACT Commercial Review – Highlights:

The Nordictrack ACT Commercial elliptical uses a center drive design (vs a front or rear wheel design).

Instead of one large flywheel in front or in back of the pedals you get two smaller flywheels on the sides of the pedals. There are several benefits to this.

First of all, this design places you more upright on the pedals – which many people feel is more comfortable. You’re not leaning as much on the handrails or moving arm bars which, in theory anyways, can mean you end up burning more calories (since the machine isn’t supporting you as much).

The design is also more compact than other elliptical trainer designs – making this a great choice for smaller workout rooms or homes where space is at a premium.

The ACT also has larger side handrails than other front or rear drive ellipticals. This can make you feel more secure when using the machine – especially if you’re new to using a crosstrainer.

Finally the pedals on this elliptical trainer are closer to the floor than standard pedals. This means that you stand closer to the floor – which again feels more secure for many people as there’s less chance of injury.

Another plus? Since you’re lower on the machine you don’t need as much ceiling height as with other trainers. The ACT elliptical designs is actually one of the best ellipticals for low ceilings heights on the market right now.

Nordictrack ACT Commercial Elliptical Console:

While the console window is on the smaller side (5 inches) it is backlit and easy to read. There’s a scrolling message board as well leading through your workout.

There’s also a sturdy tablet holder above the console you can use to attach your tablet. From there you can connect the tablet to iFit or just use it to watch TV or movies while you’re working out.

And you can stay cool easily with the built-in console fan, which is a nice touch. Or plug in your iPod and listen to your favorite workout tunes through the console speakers.

The Nordictrack ACT elliptical also comes iFit compatible. With iFit you can take your elliptical online and track your workouts over time, set new goals, download new workouts and even run famous trails all over the world.  You’ll actually see real life trails pass you by in the tablet screen as you run.

You will need your tablet to connect to iFit in order to get the most out of your iFit experience as the console itself does not have a web browser and is only dual color. Also be aware that an iFit subscription is required to use iFit.

You don’t actually need iFit to use this elliptical however – it works just fine without it. And there are 32 built-in workouts that come with the machine already. You can always add iFit later if you want the extra challenge.

Great for Added Comfort – And Families

The pedals on the ACT also give you another way to make your workouts more comfortable – there are 3 different toe-heel angles to choose from. So you can find the best fit for you. This is also great for multiple-use families as everyone can find the best fit for them.

Another thing that makes this trainer great for families is the adjustable stride. It runs from 18 inches up to 22 inches – which pretty much covers what most people need in a stride length.

You can adjust it from the console in quarter-inch increments. This means you can really drill down and find a stride that feels just perfect for you. You don’t usually get this kind of adjustable stride precision in a crosstrainer under $1000 so it’s a great little find on the ACT.

Nordictrack ACT Elliptical – Any Downsides?

While the ACT commercial elliptical is more compact than other designs – it’s more of a square footprint than your typical rectangular footprint – it does not fold up. While many ellipticals don’t fold, there are a few that are starting to come with a folding option, so it’s something to be aware of.

Also it does not come with incline – which isn’t necessary to have on a crosstrainer – but some people do like it.

If you like the Nordictrack ACT Commercial but you want a little more stability and entertainment, you might also want to check out the Nordictrack ACT 10 elliptical (seen above) – which is more of a premium option with a similar design.

It gives you an upgraded full-color console and a bit more durability to the machine.
