Bowflex 116 Elliptical Review – Highlights:

Bowflex introduced 2 brand new elliptical trainers last year. As with everything Bowflex does, they came out of the gate swinging – aiming to dethrone the competition with the quality of their trainers.

And the Bowflex 116 elliptical does not disappoint. It’s an extremely impressive machine.

You can see the quality very clearly in this trainer. The monster 30-pound flywheel helps to add stability and smoothness to your elliptical ride.

The double-wheel-track design helps to reduce side-to-side rocking (and will also stand up better to long, intense use than a single-wheel-track design).

Plus you can adjust your pedals, add some incline for extra calorie-burning and even charge your tablet as you run! So let’s dive a little deeper into why you might want to consider the Bowflex 116 elliptical for your home.

Get A More Optimal Lower Body Workout

The Bowflex 116 comes with an impressive 22 inch stride.  Stride length is the furthest distance between the pedals.

With a longer stride, you can work your lower body muscle to their full capacity. It tends to feel more natural and more like a “running motion” with less stress on your hips, back and knees.

Plus the BXE116 trainer also comes with power incline. Incline changes the shape of your elliptical running pathway. The main benefit to this is that you end up working and training different lower body muscles (and burning more calories overall).

You can change the incline from the console – or you can also do it from the controls on the moving arm bars. So you don’t have to reach up to the console and stop your upper body workout, which is pretty convenient.

Bowflex 116 Elliptical Review – Double-Wheel Track Design

A lot of starter or lower quality trainers will use a single-wheel track design.

There’s nothing really wrong with a single wheel (per pedal) running on the track behind you. But if you really work the machine hard, it puts more stress on the wheels and eventually the wheels can come off the track or worse – break.

Having a double-wheel-track design however helps to reduce the chances of this happening. This kind of design can stand up better to more intense workouts with less chance of mishap or breaking.

The double-wheel-track design also has the added benefit of reducing side-to-side swaying motion as you run as well.

Console on the Bowflex 116 Elliptical:

The console is an easy-to-read 7.5″  liquid crystal display showing all of your workout stats in multiple color design as you workout.  There are 9 pre-programmed workouts you can start with the touch of a button.

Bowflex tends to focus on helping people burn more calories on their equipment – and this console was also designed to help in that area as well.

There is a calorie burn rate meter on the console – so you can see how many calories you’re burning at any time – which can motivate you to work harder.

The console will also track your workouts every day and then you can sync it with the (free) Bowflex Results app. This is really motivating to see how far you’ve come over time. It’s yet another handy tool you can use to help you reach new fitness goals.

And finally if you want some added entertainment while running, there’s a shelf above the console you can use to hold your tablet. So you can watch your favorite TV shows or Youtube videos as you run.

Bowflex 116 Review – Comfort Touches

There’s also some extra touches on this trainer that will give you a much more comfortable workout. The BXE116 trainer comes with Switch Select pedals.

These gives you 3 different toe-heel angles to choose from. So you can easily find the right “tilt” for your body that helps you feel most comfortable.

This is also great for multiple-user families as everyone can choose a toe-heel angle that feels most comfortable for them.

You also get a massive 30-pound flywheel which is heavier than a lot of other brands give you at this price point. A heavier flywheel helps to give you a much smoother-feeling elliptical ride. It also helps to anchor the machine and add more stability to your crosstrainer.

Bowflex 116 Review – Anything Else You Should Know?

While this isn’t really a drawback, the Bowflex 116 trainer is a front drive machine with wheels on the bottom. So, in theory, it should be easy to move.

However it’s also an extremely heavy machine (263 pounds). This is great for stability – but bad if you plan to be moving it around on a regular basis.

Also, a hidden feature many people don’t know about? The BXE116 comes with a USB charging port – so you can charge your phone or tablet while working out – very cool.
