Body Champ 3-in-1 Trio Trainer Review – Highlights:

The Body Champ 3-in-1 Trio Trainer is an elliptical bike that lets you get an elliptical workout, recumbent bike workout or upright bike workout. This 3-machines-in-1 approach is very popular these days as people want to get more from their fitness equipment.

And the fact that it comes in under $500 also makes it attractive for the budget buyer.

But how does it really measure up? Here are some things you need to consider before you decide.

First of all, on the plus side this elliptical bike works as an elliptical, recumbent and upright bike with no adjustments necessary on your part.

You just stand on the moving pedals for elliptical use, sit back in the seat for recumbent use or sit forward in the seat for upright use. Yes this is handy – but it’s not necessarily ergonomically correct positioning.

Body Champ 3-in-1 Trio Trainer Review – Console:

The console on this machine is bare-bones basic. It has a very small window that can be hard to read. It’s also not backlit – which can also make reading your feedback a bit challenging.

There are only about 5 different buttons – up/down, mode, reset and recovery. There’s no built-in workouts or fans or anything like that. However there is a built in media shelf to hold your devices.

There’s also a hand-grip pulse sensor on the stationary handlebars in front of the console you can use to stay in your target-fat-burning range.

Body Champ 3-in-1 Trio Trainer Review – Stride

Stride is the furthest distance between the elliptical pedals. You want a longer stride because it helps to more fully work your lower body muscles. It also feels more comfortable as a shorter stride can feel much more jerky – like you’re trying to run in a too-short stride.

The stride on the Body Champ 3-in-1 Trio Trainer is only 12 inches – which is worrisome. As most people feel most comfortable with an 18 – 20 inch stride, this is way too short. You won’t be using your lower body muscles to the fullest extent which means you may be getting an inferior workout.

Body Champ 3-in-1 Trio Trainer Review – Design

The design is a simple bike design with the option to stand up and use this as an elliptical. The fact that you don’t have to make adjustments is handy – but as stated above, it doesn’t necessarily put you in the most ergonomically friendly positioning.

Also, the base on this bike is not the best – a bit too thin. This can cause wobbling back and forth, especially for anyone over 200 pounds.

And while there is some steel in the frame – there’s also a lot of plastic. Plastic parts are more prone to breaking off – which if you’ve ever bought a cheap piece of fitness equipment you will have experienced first-hand.

Overall this is a very simple, starter elliptical bike that would be ok only for the occasional, light exerciser.

Body Champ 3-in-1 Ellipical Bike – Other Issues

You don’t get a lot of resistance with this trainer – only 8 levels. And you have to twist a knob to change the resistance – it’s no power resistance. This means that if you’re fairly fit – you may easily top out at the highest resistance level and have no where to go.

Also the seat is only slightly adjustable – which again doesn’t give you a lot of options to change the ergonomics of your riding positions.

Other Options to the Body Champ 3-in-1 Trio Trainer

If you’re on a tight budget but still want a decent elliptical bike, you may want to consider the Proform Hybrid Trainer (seen below) – which gives you a much longer 15 inch stride, improved ergonomics, better console, and much stronger build.

And it’s only about $100 more. You also get double the resistance levels (16 vs 8) and can easily move the seat back and forth to find your most comfortable fit. (You can read the full review of the Proform Hybrid Trainer here).
