Nordictrack Freestrider FS7i Review – Highlights:

The Nordictrack Freestrider FS7i is hands down one of the most popular elliptical trainers on the market right now. It is a completely new kind of elliptical trainer design.

            nordictrack-freestrider fs7i Review
            Nordictrack FS7i Trainer

It has cushioned pedals that ride on belts rather than traditional rails attached to the crank. There are several key benefits to this this design. The top one is that you can choose your own stride.

So instead of being locked into one set stride as you are with most crosstrainers, you can actually set your own stride on this machine. It adapts to you – not the other way around. You set the stride when you push down and direct the pedals yourself.

            nordictrack freestrider fs7i elliptical review

So you can do short up and down strides like a stair climber, longer jogging strides like a standard elliptical or even longer hurdling type strides like a treadmill. So you can use it as 3 machines in 1.

You can also find the stride that feels most comfortable for you. And everyone in the family can find their perfect stride as well.

In fact, while most elliptical trainers give you a stride of around 18 to 20 inches, with the FS7i Freestrider you get strides of up to 38 inches! That’s a lot of options.

Another benefit is that you can always change things up for new challenges. And since your body doesn’t get adapted to running in one set stride, you can also burn more calories.

Benefits of a Center Drive Design on the Freestrider FS7i

You may have also noticed that this is a center drive elliptical – with two smaller flywheels on either side of the pedals. This design has the benefit of placing you more upright on the elliptical – which feels more comfortable and natural for many people.

            nordictrack freestrider fs7i elliptical review

Additionally the Freestrider FS7i is very low impact – in fact it’s almost zero impact. This makes it ideal if you’re prone to shin splints, aching joints or other injuries that make it hard to exercise.

And because you’re running in your own ergonomically natural stride, you’re also less likely to be sore after your workout. Less stress and strain makes for more enjoyable workouts.

A final benefit of this design is that’s it’s also more compact than other elliptical trainers. You don’t have the track and wheel setup you usually get with front drive designs (which can also require more cleaning and dusting). So if you have a smaller area to workout, this is a plus.

Nordictrack Freestrider FS7i Review – the Entertainment:

But it’s not just all about the design on this trainer – it wouldn’t be Nordictrack’s premium elliptical without all the toys. You get a large, full-color, touch-screen console with a web browser built in. So you can surf the net, read emails or watch YouTube videos as you workout.

And the trainer comes iFit compatible. iFit lets you connect your machine online and then run famous trails all over the world – from Paris to Hawaii. iFit will also track your workouts to show you how far you’ve come (which can be very motivating). You can also use it to set and achieve new goals.

And for more challenge you can always download new workouts to your trainer from celebrity trainers like Jillian Michaels where she coaches you through your workout through the built-in console speakers.

More Benefits of the Nordictrack Freestrider FS7i:

Need some more challenge? The Nordictrack Freestrider FS7i also comes with up to 10 degree incline. Incline changes the slope of your workout and helps you train different lower body muscles.

            nordictrack freestrider fs7i incline

You can change both your incline and resistance from the console – or from the controls on the moving arm bars. These in-handle controls are really handy because you don’t have to reach up to the console (and break up your upper body arm workout).

Another great thing with this trainer is that, if you buy it through the Manufacturer here, you can also get a Free wireless heart rate monitor. Many people prefer the wireless chest strap as it tends to be more accurate than hand grip sensors.

The chest strap is also a lot more convenient than having to continually grasp the hand sensors to get a reading.

And if you don’t like the thought of spending hours assembling your crosstrainer, you’ll really like the easier out-of-the box assembly on this unit. The new design significantly reduces the number of steps required to put it together – so you’ll be working out sooner with less frustration.

Nordictrack Freestrider FS7i Elliptical Review –  Any Downsides?

If you want to try iFit, you will need a yearly or monthly subscription. However you don’t need iFit to use this elliptical – or the web browser.

And you do get 35 built-in workouts already with the machine. So you may want to wait and buy iFit when you’re ready – or with the machine. You can get iFit direct from the Manufacturer here.

Also, while this isn’t really a downside, if you want a few more premium features like a slightly larger console, heavier flywheel, you may want to consider the next model up – the FS9i trainer – seen below. It also adds decline as well as incline for even more crosstraining options.
