Is The Nordictrack ACT Elliptical A Good Buy For You?
Looking for the latest Nordictrack ACT review? While the ACT elliptical has been around for a few years now, it usually gets upgraded every year. Here’s what you need to know about this year’s model:
The Nordictrack ACT Elliptical is currently the most affordable center drive elliptical from Nordictrack coming in just under $1000.
Center drive trainers place the flywheel beside the footpedals instead of out front or in back.
This has the advantage of placing you more upright on the pedals – and some people find this a more comfortable design.
The very popular Nordictrack ACT elliptical has been updated with an added tablet holder above the console, more resistance levels and an overall sleeker look.
So is it a good buy for you? Here’s what you need to know:

Nordictrack ACT Review – The Pros:
#1 Dual Side Flywheel Design
This is also called a “center drive” design because the flywheels are situated more in the center of the machine. There are some definite benefits to this design.
As stated above you tend to stand more upright on the crosstrainer – which feels more comfortable for many people. Plus the fact that you’re not leaning on the handrails as much can mean that you actually burn more calories per workout.
Finally, the pedals tend to be closer together with this design – so you have less strain on your hips. If you’re planning on longer workouts, this can make a real difference in how you feel afterwards.
#2 More Compact Than Traditional Elliptical Trainers
Again, because of the design, the ACT is more compact than a traditional elliptical – and takes up less space. It’s more of a square than a long rectangle and the footprint is 54.0″ L x 31.5″ W – much shorter than your front or rear drive machines.
#3 Adjustable Stride
The ACT lets you choose and set your stride with 3 different settings – 18, 20 and 22 inches. These are all excellent stride lengths that will fully help to work your leg muscles.
Plus it’s great for multi user families as everyone can choose a stride that works for them.
#4 Lower Step On Height
Because of the center drive design, you also have a lower step on height than a traditional front or rear drive trainer. This is a great choice if you have a lower ceiling height and you don’t want to be too close to the ceiling.
#5 Added Tablet Holder
Nordictrack added a sturdy bracket above the console that will hold your tablet. So you can watch your favorite shows or movies while you workout.
Plus if you use iFit LIVE, you can connect it with your tablet to get some incredible visuals of the trails you’re running.
#6 iFit LIVE
This crosstrainer comes with iFit LIVE. iFit connects your crosstrainer to the Internet using the wireless modem in your home. From there you can do all sorts of wild and wonderful things.
You can download new workouts from Jillian Michaels where she coaches you through your workout. You can map out new trails to run using Googlemaps.
You can sync and track your workouts over time to reach new goals.
You can also compete against friends and the iFit community online. Basically you’ll never get bored with iFit. It’s a great way to continually challenge yourself as you get in better shape.
#7 Adjustable pedals
Customize your workout even more with the adjustable footpedals. You can choose from 3 different toe-heel angles to find the most comfortable fit for you.
Nordictrack ACT Review – Cons:
#1 iFit Live Subscription Extra
While you do get the iFit module included, the iFit LIVE subscription is extra (around $99 a year). However you don’t need to use iFit in order to use this elliptical So you don’t have to buy iFit right away – you can wait and get it when you’re ready.
#2 Not As Many “Toys”
While the ACT Commercial elliptical is the most affordable in the series, it doesn’t come with some of the “toys” of the higher end ACT 10 – like a multi-color touch-screen or web browser. This may or may not matter to you – it just depends on what you want.
If you’re looking for a sleek, commercial-style elliptical design, without spending a fortune, you’ll probably love the ACT commercial elliptical. It’s affordable and designed for extra comfort and calorie burning.
It will also take up less space in your home than a rear or front drive elliptical – which makes it great for smaller workout areas like condos or apartments.
Plus with iFit LIVE, tablet holder, an iPod dock and 32 built-in workouts, you’ll never run out of fun things to do while you’re on it.
